Visareferent / Austauschreferent: Sorry, besso, we don't offhand know what the CBA exam is. We'll look it up and will insert the information later or in the transcript. Besso, for the single purpose of taking an exam you can travel on a B-1/2 visitor visa. Or, if you are eligible, you can travel on the visa waiver program. However, if you are taking classes, you probably need an F-1 visa.

iris2: Ich bereise zur Zeit mit einem B-Visum die USA und da es mir sehr gefaellt wuerde ich gern ab Herbst hier studieren. Ist es notwendig wieder nach Deutschland zu reisen, um das Studenten-Visum zu beantragen, oder kann ich das auch von hier machen? Die Gebuehren am College betragen $18000 der groesste Teil davon - soweit ich das sehen kann- werden fuer Unterkunft und Essen berechnet. Nun ist es aber so, dass ich bei Freunden meiner Eltern wohnen koennte, muss ich trotzdem den gesamten Betrag auf meinem oder dem Konto meiner Eltern nachweisen koennen?

Sprechen Sie mit dem Collge: das International Student Office hat in diesen Dingen viel Erfahrung und kann Ihnen bei der Ermittlung Ihrer realen Kosten behilflich sein.

Visareferent / Austauschreferent: Providing you can show documentation of your ties to a residence abroad - whether in Germany or in China - you are welcome to apply at any of our consulates in Germany (Berlin, Frankfurt, or Munich). You may also apply in China, if that is more convenient. The key is to bring information to support your ties to a residence abroad.

barthel: Meine Fragen drehen sich um einen selbstorganisierten Schüleraufenthalt meiner Tochter. Viele Fragen wurden in vorhergehenden Chats schon beantwortet. Jetzt habe ich noch spezielle Fragen, wie diese: Wielange ist ein Visum für die Einreise gültig vom Ausstellungstag ab gerechnet? Unsere Tochter würde eine Schule in Pennsylvania besuchen. Schulbeginn ist der 01.09.08. Unsere Planung ist, dass sie am 23.08.2008 in die USA startet. Wäre das vom Visum her abgedeckt?

Das Visum berechtigt Ihre Tochter 30 Tage vorher einzureisen und 60 Tage im Anschluss an das Programm aufenthalten. Wenn Sie freiwillige soziale oder ökologische Arbeit in den USA machen moechten greifen einige Vorschriften: 9 FAM 41.31 N9.1-5 Participants in Voluntary Service Programs (CT:VISA-701; 02-15-2005) a. Aliens participating in a voluntary service program benefiting U.S. local communities, who establish that they are members of, and have a commitment to, a particular recognized religious or nonprofit charitable organization. No salary or remuneration should be paid from a U.S. source, other than an allowance or other reimbursement for expenses incidental to the volunteers’ stay in the United States. b. A “voluntary service program” is an organized project conducted by a recognized religious or nonprofit charitable organization to assist the poor or the needy or to further a religious or charitable cause. The program may not, however, involve the selling of articles and/or the solicitation and acceptance of donations. The burden that the voluntary program meets the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) definition of “voluntary service program” is placed upon the recognized religious or nonprofit charitable organization, which must also meet other criteria set out in the DHS Operating Instructions with regard to voluntary workers. c. You must assure that the written statement issued by the sponsoring organization is attached to the passport containing the visa for presentation to the DHS officer at the port of entry. barthel: Uns liegt das ausgefüllte Formblatt I 20 mittlerweile vor. In Punkt 7 geht es um die Schulgebühren. Gesamt beläuft sich der Betrag auf 3.250,00 USD, aufgeteilt in die "tuition fee" von 2.500 USD und in "living expenses" von 750 USD. Die Schule hat uns mitgeteilt, dass nur die "tuition fee" in Höhe von 2.500 USD überwiesen werden soll, während die "living expenses" vor Ort in bar gezahlt werden sollen. Wenn wir nur die "tuition fee" überweisen, kann das zu Problemen bei der Visumsbeantragung führen?
Visareferent / Austauschreferent: Liebe Fam. Barthel, wir gehen davon aus, dass wenn Ihre Tochter im Interview nachweisen kann, dass sie die $750 hat, diese kein Problem sein duerfte. Wir vergewissern uns, und fuegen die Bestaetigung in das Transkript ein. // Ja, zur Bestätigung: die 'Tuition' ohne 'living expenses' reicht aus. Es muss nur ausreichend Geld fuer die Living Expenses vorhanden sein

Ulrike and Michael: my children are holding an L2-visa; we all applied for the green card; they will go to a US college in Fall this year; is there any way they legally can work while they attend college (with paid salery)? Are there any limits on the salery?
Visareferent / Austauschreferent: Once your children start college, they will be in student status on F visas. On an F visa, students may not work for the first year but are allowed to work on campus any following year. It is possible that, given your status, the Department of Homeland security might grant special permission for your children to work. To clarify this answer, please contact your nearest DHS office. barthel: Die SEVIS-Gebühr ist zwischenzeitlich auch von uns bezahlt worden. Nun geht es um die Visumsbeantragung. Dafür muss ja ein Termin telefonisch oder neuerdings auch online vereinbart werden. Ab wann wäre das möglich und sinnvoll, wenn die Schule am 01.09.2008 beginnt und die Einreise am 23.08.2008 erfolgen soll?

jojo2: Hallo, ich hätte gerne gewußt, ob es für einen Austauschschüler, der mit dem passendem Visum ein organisiertes Schuljahr in den U.S.A verbringt, möglich ist die U.S.A. während dieser Zeit zwecks Urlaub zu verlassen und dann wieder einzureisen? Danke für die Antwort!
Visareferent / Austauschreferent: Yes, during the school year (for the dates listed on your visa) it is possible travel in and out of the United States. You may not travel to and from the U.S. during the 30-day grace period before the start of your school year, or the 30-days after the finish of the program.

barthel: Es muss von uns noch die Visumsantragsgebühr bezahlt werden. Kann das jetzt schon erfolgen, oder wann wäre der richtige Zeitpunkt? Kann diese Gebühr mehrere Monate vor dem Termin beim Konsulat schon beglichen werden?
Visareferent / Austauschreferent: Nach unserern Informationen ist dies sofort moeglich.

barthel: Zur Visumsbeantragung muss unsere Tochter zum Konsulat. Da wir als Eltern vermutlich nicht mit ins Botschaftsgebäude dürfen, muss sie das Gespräch alleine führen. Gibt es ein Formular auf dem wir als Eltern unser Einverständnis erklären, dass unsere Tochter diesen Auslandsschulaufenthalt mit unserer Erlaubnis durchführt. Oder reichen unsere Unterschriften auf dem I 20 - Formular?
Visareferent / Austauschreferent: If appropriate, parents are permitted to attend visa interviews with their children. It is also possible to send a letter of support with the applicant, but this is not necessary.

U.S. Embassy Berlin: Kombination von Austauschsemester und Praktikum Wie kann man diese kombinieren? Wie laueft der Change of Status ab? Kann der auch nur in den USA abgewickelt werden? Dann haette ich noch eine Frage zum FLug. Ich find es ziemlich schwierig schon einen Rueckflug zu buchen, gerade wenn man noch nicht weiss ob man nach dem Ablauf des Visums zb noch umliegende Lander bereisen moechte, oder einen Praktikumsplatz bekommt. Ich denke es waere vielleicht am guenstigsten beide FLuege einzeln zu buchen. Ist es erlaubt bei der Einreise noch kein Rueckticket zu besitzen, und dies dan von der USA aus zu buchen? Vielen Dank
Visareferent / Austauschreferent: It is possible to do an exchange semester and internship in the U.S. back-to-back. The applicant must either return to their home country in between the school semester and internship semester to apply for the new J visa, or they can apply for change of status with Department of Homeland Security once in the U.S. on the student visa. The process of changing status (from a student to an intern) can take a long time, so contact your closest DHS office as soon as possible upon arriving in America. // Von Austauschreferent: Bei einem längerfristigen Aufenthalt muss das Rueckflugticket nicht vorliegen. Sie können es also erst in den USA buchen

barthel: Ich habe eben erwähnt, dass das Schulgeld bezahlt werden muss und eine Frage dazu gestellt. Wenn dieses Geld überwiesen wurde, sollte von der Schule ein Nachweis verlangt werden, dass das Geld in den USA angekommen ist? Oder was akzeptiert das Konsulat als Nachweis der Bezahlung des Schulgeldes beim Termin zur Visumsbeantragung?
Visareferent / Austauschreferent: Fam. Barthel: Das I-20 ist ausreichend. Nur im (äusserst ungewöhlinchen) Zweifelsfall kann es passieren, dass ein Bankauszug o.ä. verlangt wird. Dieser kann dann aber schriftlich nachgereicht werden.

barthel: Unsere Tochter ist 16 Jahre alt, könnte theoretisch in den USA den Führerschein erwerben. Was müssen wir als Eltern ihr von Deutschland aus mitgeben, damit sie in den USA nachweisen kann, dass wir damit einverstanden sind, dass sie dort den Führerschein macht?

ziller40: Ich habe gehört das ein community college billiger ist als ein Unistudium. Aber mit welchem deutschen Abschluss ist dieser dann gleich zu setzen?
Visareferent / Austauschreferent: Lieber Ziller40, der Abschluss "Associate Degree" (und manchmal auch Certificate und Diploma), den man an Community Colleges erwerben kann, wird in Deutschland leider nicht anerkannt. Viele Studenten nutzen die niedrigen Gebuehren der Community Colleges um im Anschluss an die 2 Jahre direkt in das dritte Jahr einer 4-Jahres Institution zu wechseln, um dann den Bachelor zu machen. Die meisten Community Collleges haben Transfer Programme die dies erleichtern. Sie arbeiten oft mit einer oder mehreren 4-Jahres Institutionen zusammen.
