A

ABD (all but dissertation)
Titel, der manchmal benutzt wird, wenn ein Doktorand bis auf die Dissertation alle Voraussetzungen für die Promotion erfüllt hat.

Academic advisor
Professor, der von der US-Hochschule oder vom Fachbereich jedem Studierenden als "advisor" zugeteilt wird, der bei der Kurswahl berät und Ansprechpartner für alle Fachfragen ist.
A member of a college faculty who helps and advises students solely on academic matters.

Academic probation
Studierende, die sehr schlechte Noten haben, erhalten ein Semester lang die Chance, eine klare Verbesserung ihrer Noten nachzuweisen. Sollte das nicht gelingen, müssen sie die Hochschule verlassen.

Academic record (transcript)
Computerausdruck mit einer Übersicht der belegten Kurse und der erzielten Noten, ausgestellt von der Hochschule, nur gültig mit Hochschulsiegel und der Unterschrift eines Hochschulvertreters. Der Nachweis über das Hochschulstudium an US-Hochschulen.
A certified copy (see "Notarization") of a student's educational record.

Academic year
Das Studienjahr an US-Hochschulen ist aufgeteilt in Semester, Trimester oder "quarter". Im Sommer werden zudem an vielen Hochschulen Kurse im Rahmen von "summer sessions" angeboten.Teilweise arbeitet man außerdem mit dem "4-1-4" System, d.h. mit zwei jeweils 16wöchigen Semestern, die unterbrochen werden von einem Monat, der für Praktika oder individuelle Projekte genutzt wird.
The period of formal instruction, usually September to May; may be divided into terms of varying lengths: semester, trimester, or quarters.

Accreditation
Anerkennung von Hochschulen und Studiengängen durch Überprüfung und Kontrolle der akademischen Standards.
Approval of colleges and universities by nationally recognized professional associations or regional accrediting bodies.

ACT (American College Testing Assessment)
Standardized undergraduate admissions test, Less common than the SAT I test

Advance registration
A process of choosing classes in advance of other students.

Advanced standing (advanced placement)
Anrechnung von Leistungen, die vor Beginn des Studiums erbracht wurden, d.h. vor dem Beginn der "undergraduate studies". Der Nachweis erfolgt durch besondere Tests bzw. durch das miteingereichte Abiturzeugnis bei deutschen Bewerbern.
A waiver of some of the studies normally required for an undergraduate degree, granted to a student on the basis of prior study or experience.

Affidavit of Support
An official document proving a promise of funding from an individual or organization.

Alma mater
Hochschule, an der man seinen Abschluß gemacht hat und der man sich verbunden fühlt. In den USA ist das meistens die Hochschule, an der man seinen Bachelor erworben hat.

Alumna/alumnus (Plural: alumnae/alumni)
Ehemalige weibliche oder männliche Studierende bzw. Hochschulabsolventen.

American College Testing Assessment (ACT)
Standardized undergraduate admissions test, Less common than the SAT I test.

Assistantship
A study grant of financial assistance to a graduate student that is offered in return for certain services in teaching or laboratory supervision as a teaching assistant, or for services in research as a research assistant.

Associate degree
The degree awarded after a two-year period of study; it can be "terminal" (vocational) or "transfer" (the first two years of a bachelor's degree).

Asynchronous
A term used to describe distance education study in which instruction can be received by students wherever and whenever they desire, as long as they have access to the Internet or, in the case of correspondence education, to the mail. See also "Synchronous."

Audit
Möglichkeit der zusätzlichen Kurswahl für eingeschriebene Studierende, und zwar auf freiwilliger Basis und ohne die Absicht "credit" dafür zu bekommen.
To take a class without receiving credit toward a degree.

Bachelor's Degree
Degree awarded upon completion of approximately four years of full-time study in the liberal arts and sciences or professional subjects. It is a prerequisite to study in a graduate program.

Bulletin
A publication created each year by a university or college that contains the details of academic majors offered and the requirements for completing them. Usually includes a listing and description of every class the institution offers

C
Campus
The land on which the buildings of a college or university are located.

Carrel
Bibliotheken amerikanischer Hochschulen bieten Studierenden die Möglichkeit, einen Arbeitsplatz für das gesamte Semester zu reservieren.
Also 'study carrel'. Individual study area usually reserved for graduate students in a library; available on a first-come, first-served basis (sometimes for a fee).

Charter School

public school that operates under special contract stating how the school is run, what will be taught and how success is measured.

CGFNS
Commission on Graduates for Foreign Nursing Schools

Class rank
Rang innerhalb eines Kurses oder einer Klasse, zum Beispiel als erster oder viertbester.
A number or ratio indication a student's academic standing in his or her graduating class. A student who ranks first in a class of 100 students would report his or her class rank a 1/100, while a student ranking last would report 100/100. Class rank may also be expressed in percentiles (e.g., the top 25 percent, the lower 50 percent).

Cluster college
Kooperation von Hochschulen in unmittelbarer geographischer Nähe, dazu gehört zum Beispiel die gemeinsame Nutzung von Bibliotheken oder anderen Einrichtungen durch alle eingeschriebenen Studenten.

Coed
A college or university that admits both men and women; also refers to a dormitory that houses both men and women.

College
A postsecondary institution that provides undergraduate education and, in some cases, master's level degrees. College, in a separate sense, is a division of a university; e.g. College of Business.

College catalog
Vorlesungsverzeichnis.
An official publication giving information about a university's academic programs, facilities, entrance requirements, and student life.

Commencement
Feierliche Abschlußfeier des akademischen Jahres, bei dem die erfolgreichen Absolventen ihre akademischen Grade erhalten.

Comprehensive examination (preliminary examination, qualifying examination)
Anspruchsvolle Fachprüfung für Doktoranden, die bestanden werden muss, bevor sie mit ihrer Dissertation beginnen dürfen.

Community, technical, or junior college
A postsecondary institution that offers programs of up to tow years' duration, including the associate degree in the arts or sciences (A.A. or A.S.)

Conditional admission
An acceptance to a college or university that is dependent upon the individual completing coursework or meeting specified criteria prior to enrollment.

Consortium
Hochschulverbund

Continuing and adult education
Weiterbildungsangebot an Hochschulen und auch an High Schools, oft im Rahmen von Abend- und Teilzeitkursen.

Core course (core requirement)
Pflichtkurs, der belegt werden muss, um die fachlichen Auflagen für den akademischen Abschluß zu erfüllen.
Mandatory courses required for completion of a degree.

Corequisite
Parallelkurs, der als fachliche Ergänzung zu einem anderen Kurs belegt werden muß.

Course
Regularly scheduled class sessions of one to five hours (or more) per week during a term. A degree program is made up of a specified number of required and elective courses and varies from institution to institution.

Course load
Arbeitspensum im Semester.
The number of courses or credits taken in a specific term.

Courses in progress
Belegte, aber noch nicht abgeschlossene Kurse und noch zu belegende Kurse.

Credit (unit)/Credits
"Maßeinheit" für erbrachte Leistungen im Studium. Ein Kurs besteht in der Regel aus drei bis vier "credits". Für die erfolgreiche Beendigung des Studiums und zur Erlangung des Abschlußes belegt und besteht man die geforderte Anzahl von "credits".
Units institutions use to record the completion of courses (with passing grades) that are required for an academic degree. The catalog of a college or university defines the number and kinds of credits that are required for the university's degrees and states the value of each course offered in terms of "credit hours" or "units."

Credit hour
Semesterwochenstunde. Die Anzahl der "credit hours", für die man sich eingeschrieben hat, bestimmt unter anderem die Höhe der Studiengebühren.

Curriculum
Lehr- und Studienplan.

Cut
Unauthorized absence from a class.

D

DAT
Dental Admission Test required of applicants to dental schools.

Dean
Director or highest authority within a certain professional school or college of a university.

Deferral of admission (deferment)
Angebot von Hochschulen, die erreichte Zulassung um ein Jahr zu verschrieben.

Degree
Diploma or title conferred by a college, university, or professional school upon completion of a prescribed program of studies.

Dental Admission Test (DAT)
Dental Admission Test required of applicants to dental schools.

Department
Administrative subdivision of a school, college, or university through which instruction in a certain field of study is given (such as English department or history department.

Diploma Mills (cf. also Accreditation)
The terms "diploma mill" and "degree mill" have no legal meaning, but they have come into widespread use to describe some unaccredited institutions and other educational providers that have been repeatedly denied recognition and/or prosecuted as frauds by state governments. A U.S. school, institution, or other educational provider is understood to have unaccredited status if it is not accredited by a recognized regional, national, or specialized accrediting association.

Dissertation
Thesis written on an original topic of research, usually presented as one of the final requirements for the doctorate.

Dormitory
Studentenwohnheim, das den Studenten oft die Vollverpflegung ("meal plan") in einer eigenen Mensa mit anbietet.
Commonly referred to as "dorms." Housing facilities on the campus of a college or university reserved for students. A typical dormitory would include student rooms, bathrooms, common rooms, and possibly a cafeteria.

Drop and add period
Die Studenten haben nach der Einschreibung in die gewünschten Kurse die Chance, innerhalb eines bestimmten Zeitraums diese Kurse wieder abzuwählen und sich neue zu suchen.
A process at the beginning of the term whereby students can delete or add classes with an instructor's permission.

E

Early action (early decision)
Spezielles Zulassungverfahren für Studienanfänger, die sich "vorzeitig" an vorwiegend selektiveren Hochschulen einschreiben können. Bei diesem Verfahren dürfen sich die zukünftigen Studenten nur bei einer Hochschule bewerben.

Elective
Wahlfach.
Courses that students may choose to take for credit toward their intended degree, as distinguished from courses that they are required to take.

Enrollment
Anzahl der eingeschriebenen Studenten.

ERAS - Electronic Residency Application System
Electronic system for obtaining a residency position in the field of medicine in the U.S.

ESL - English as a Second Language
A course used to teach English to students whose first language is not English.

Extension education
Zusätzlich zum regulären Studienbetrieb angebotene Kurse, hauptsächlich gedacht als Weiterbildungsangebot für Berufstätige.

Extracurricular activities
Außerschulische und –universitäre Aktivitäten: soziales Engagement, künstlerische Aktivitäten, Sport, Musik und Clubs.
Nonacademic activities undertaken outside university courses.

F

Faculty
Lehrkörper, Gesamtheit der Professoren.
The members of the teaching staff, and occasionally the administrative staff, of an educational institution. The faculty is responsible for designing the plans of study offered by the institution.

FAFSA
(see Free application for Federal Student Aid)

Fee
Gebühren, die für die Nutzung bestimmter Service-Einrichtungen der Hochschule oder für bestimmte Kurse erhoben werden ("film course fee", "computer center fee", "health center fee").
An amount charge by universities, in addition to tuition, to cover costs of institutional services.

Fellowship
A form of financial assistance, usually awarded to a graduate student. Generally, no service is required of the student in turn.

Field of Study
Studienfach.

Final exam
Abschlußprüfung eines Kurses.
A cumulative exam, taken at the end of a term, encompassing all material covered in a particular course.

Financial aid
A general term that includes all types of money, loans, and work-study programs offered to a student to help pay tuition, fees, and living expenses. It is based on the student's financial need, as documented by family income, assets, and other factors.

Flunk
To fail an examination or a course.

Foreign student advisor
Anlaufstelle für alle internationalen Studierenden.

Fraternity
Sozialer Zusammenschluß/Verbindung von Männern, hauptsächlich "undergraduates". Die Mitglieder leben normalerweise zusammen in einem Haus.

Free application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)
Available to U.S. citizens and eligible noncitizen. An eligible noncitizen is (1) a U.S. permanent resident and has a Alien Registration Receipt Card (I-551); (2) a conditional permanent resident (I-551C); or (3) an other eligible noncitizen with an Arrival-Departure Record (I-94) from the Department of Homeland Security showing any of the following designations: "Refugee," "Asylum Granted," "Parol" or "Cuban-Haitian Entrant." If you are neither a citizen nor an eligible noncitizen, you are not eligible for federal student aid. However, you may be eligible for state or college aid.

Freshman
Student im ersten Jahr des Bachelor-Studiums.
A first year student at a secondary school, college, or university.

Full-time student
Vollzeitstudent, eingeschrieben für neun bis sechzehn "credit hours" (je nach Studienabschnitt und Fachbereich) im Semester.
A student who is enrolled at a university and is taking at least the minimum number of credits (often 12) to meet the university's requirement for a full course load.

G

GPA - grade point average
Notendurchschnitt im Semester (oder Schuljahr).
A system of recording achievement based on a numerical average of the grades attained in each course.

Graduate studies
Zwei- bis vierjährige Studiengänge, die nach dem Erwerb des Bachelor’s zum Master’s, zum Advanced Professional Degree (in Fächern wie in Medizin, Business Administration oder Jura) oder zum Ph.D./Doctorate führen.

Grade
The evaluation of a student's academic work.

Grade Point Average - GPA
Notendurchschnitt im Semester (oder Schuljahr).
A system of recording achievement based on a numerical average of the grades attained in each course.

Grading System
The type of scale - that is, letter grade, pass/fail, percentage - used by schools, colleges, and universities in the U.S. Most institutions commonly use letter grades to indicate the quality of a student's academic performance: "A" (excellent), "B" (good), "C" (average), "D" (below average), and "F" (failing). Work rated "C" or above is usually required of an undergraduate student to continue his or her studies; work rated "B" or higher is usually required of a graduate student to continue. Grades of "P" (pass), "S" (satisfactory), and "N" (no credit) are also used. In percentage scales, 100 percent is the highest mark, and 65 to 70 percent is usually the lowest passing mark.

Graduate
A student who has completed a course of study, either at the secondary or university level. A graduate program at a university is a study course for students who already hold a bachelor's degree.

Grant
A form of financial aid.

H

High School
The last three or four years of the twelve-year school education program in the U.S.; secondary school.

Higher education
Hochschulausbildung.
Postsecondary education at colleges, universities, junior or community colleges, professional schools, technical institutes, and teacher-training schools.

Honors program
Besonders anspruchsvolle Kurse im "undergraduate"-Studium, nur offen für Studierende mit sehr guten Noten.

I

- Intensive English Program)
A type of English language program that usually includes 20 to 30 hours of classroom work per week.

Incomplete
A designation given in lieu of a grade for a course that has not been completed (with permission). The student will be given a specified period for completion of the coursework, after which an "F" (a failing grade) will result.

Independent study
Angebot für Studierende, an einem speziellen Projekt oder Thema unter der individuellen Betreuung eines Professors zu arbeiten und dieses dann als Kurs angerechnet zu bekommen.
Official coursework undertaken outside a classroom setting. It will usually be monitored by an instructor.

In-state
Siehe "resident".

Institute of Technology
An institution of higher education that specializes in the sciences and technology.

Intensive English Program - IEP
A type of English language program that usually includes 20 to 30 hours of classroom work per week.

Internal Revenue Service - IRS
The U.S. government body that oversees the collection of income taxes.

International Student Advisor - ISA
The person at a university who is in charge of providing information and guidance to international students in such areas as government regulations, visas, academic regulations, social customs, language, financial or housing problems, travel plans, insurance, and legal matters.

Internship
Placement of a student in a work environment in order to acquire professional experience.

J

Junior
Student im dritten Jahr des Bachelor-Studiums.
A third-year student at a secondary school, college, or university.

Junior year abroad
Auslandsstudienjahr für US-Studenten, die typischerweise im dritten Studienjahr des Bachelor-Studiums ins Ausland gehen.

K

K-12
Vom Kindergarten bis zum "grade 12", dem letzten Jahr der High School in den USA.

L

Language Requirement
A requirement of some graduate programs that students must show basic reading and writing proficiency in one other language besides their own to receive their degree.

Law School Admission Test - LSAT
Required of applicants to professional law programs and some postgraduate law programs in American law schools.

Lease
A legal document to show an agreement between the owner (landlord) and the renter of an apartment or other property.

Lecture
Common method of instruction in college and university courses; a professor lectures in classes of 20 to several hundred students. Lectures may be supplemented with regular small group discussions led by teaching assistants.

Letter of recommendation or reference
Empfehlungsschreiben (von Lehrern, Professoren oder Arbeitgebern).
Also called "personal recommendation," "personal endorsement," or "personal reference". A letter appraising an applicant's qualifications, written by a professor or employer who knows the applicant's character and work.

Liberal arts (liberal arts and sciences)
Breit gefächerte Belegung von Kursen in den Geisteswissenschaften, Sozial- und Naturwissenschaften.
A term referring to academic studies of subjects in the humanities, the social sciences, and the sciences. Also called "liberal arts and sciences" or "arts and sciences."

Loan
A sum of money lent to an individual (or organization) with an agreement to repay the money, possibly with interest.

Lower division
Die ersten zwei Jahre des vierjährigen Studiums, das zum Bachelor-Abschluß führt ("freshman" und "sophomore" genannt).

LSAT - Law School Admission Test
Required of applicants to professional law programs and some postgraduate law programs in American law schools.

M

Maintenance
Refers to the expenses of attending a university, including room (living quarters) and bard (meals), books, clothing, laundry, local transportation, and incidentals.

Major
Hauptfach
The subject in which a student whishes to concentrate.

Major professor/thesis adviser
For research degrees, the professor who works closely with a student in planning and choosing a research plan, in conducting the research, and in presenting the results. The major professor serves as the head of a committee of faculty members who review progress and results.

Master's Degree
Degree awarded upon completion of academic requirements that usually include a minimum of one year's study beyond the bachelor's degree.

Medical College Admission Test - MCAT
Required of applicants to U.S. medical schools.

Midterm exam
An exam administered after half the academic term has passe that covers all class material studied until that point.

Minor
Nebenfach
A subject in which the student hakes the second greatest concentration of courses.

Money order
Bargeldüberweisung.

N

National Resident Matching Program - NRMP
Required of applicants to U.S. Medical schools.

NCLEX-RN
A licensing examination for registered nurses. It is required by each state and must be passed before a nurse can practice in that state.

Non-resident
Amerikaner ausanderen Bundesstaaten, die den Status des "resident" erst nach einem bestimmten Zeitraum erwerben, und grundsätzlich alle ausländischen Studierenden. An öffentlichen Hochschulen werden von "non-resident students" höhere Studiengebühren verlangt als von "residents".
A student who does not meet the residence requirements of the state. Tuition fees and admission policies may differ for residents and nonresidents. International students are usually classified as nonresidents, and there is little possibility of changing to resident status at a later date for tuition purposes.

Notarization
The certification of a document (or a statement or signature) as authentic and true by a public official (known in the United States as a "notary public") or a lawyer who is also a commissioner of oaths.

NRMP - National Resident Matching Program
For applicants to U.S. Medical schools.

O

Open admission
Einzige Zulassungsvoraussetzung an der Hochschule ist der Schulabschluss, d.h. alle US-Bewerber mit einem High School Diploma oder einem gleichwertigen Abschluß werden zugelassen.

Oral exam
Mündliche Prüfung.

Out-of-state
Siehe "non-resident".

P

Pass/Fail grading system
Alternative zum üblichen Notensystem an US-Hochschulen: bestanden oder nicht bestanden.

Ph.D. Doctorate
The highest academic degree conferred by a university to students who have completed at least three years of graduate study beyond the bachelor's and/or master's degree and who have demonstrated their academic ability in oral and written examinations and through original research presented in a form of a dissertation.

Placement service
Serviceangebot der US-Hochschulen, die professionelle Vermittlung von Praktika und Hilfe für Absolventen bei der Suche nach einem Arbeitsplatz.

Placement test
An examination used to test a student's academic ability in a certain field so that he or she may be placed in the appropriate courses in that field. In some cases, a student may be given academic credit based on the results of a placement test.

Plagiarism
Ernstes Vergehen in den USA, das zum Ausschluß von der Hochschule führen kann: Plagiat, "Diebstahl" geistigen Eigentums.
The use of another person's works or ideas as your own.

Plan of study
A detailed description of the course of study for which a candidate applies. The plan should incorporate the objectives given in the student's "statement of purpose."

Post doctorate
Studies designed for those who have completed a doctoral degree (Ph.D.)

Postgraduate
Usually refers to studies for individuals who have completed a graduate degree. May also be used to refer to graduate education.

Postsecondary education
Hochschulausbildung.

Preliminary examination
Siehe comprehensive examination.

Prerequisites
Kurse oder andere Leistungen, die erbracht werden müssen, bevor bestimmte Kurse belegt werden können.
Program or course that a student is required to complete before being permitted to enroll in a more advanced program or course.

President
The rector or highest administrative officer of an academic institution.

Professional degree
Usually obtained after a bachelor's degree in fields such as medicine, dentistry, veterinary medicine, or law.

Q

Qualifying examination
Siehe comprehensive examination.
In many graduate departments, an examination given to students who have completed required coursework for a doctoral degree, but who have not yet begun the dissertation or thesis. A qualifying examination may be oral or written, or both, and must be passed for the student to continue.

Quarter
Period of study of approximately 10 to 12 weeks' duration.

Quiz
Meistens unangekündigter kurzer schriftlicher Test in einem Kurs.
Short written or oral test; a quiz is less formal than an examination.

R

RA - Resident assistant
Student, der als Ansprechpartner für alle Bewohner eines Studentenwohnheims fungiert und dafür ein Teilstipendium erhält.
A person who assists the residence hall director in campus dormitories and is usually the first point of contact for students with problems or queries regarding dorm life. RAs are usually students at the college who receive free accommodation and other benefits in return for their services.

Registrar
Zuständige Stelle in der Hochschulverwaltung, die die "transcripts" ausstellt und die die Daten der eingeschriebenen Studenten verwaltet.

Registration
Einscheibung in die Kurse und die damit verbundene Bezahlung der Studiengebühren und anderer "fees".
Process through which students select courses to be taken during a quarter, semester, or trimester.

Residency
Clinical training in a chosen specialty.

Residence hall
Siehe "dormitory".

Resident
US-Bürger, die bereits seit längerem in einem entsprechenden Bundesstaat leben. Amerikaner müssen mindestens sechs bis zwölf Monate in einem Bundesstaat leben, bevor sie dort den Status eines "resident" erhalten. "Residents" zahlen an öffentlichen Hochschulen niedrigere Studiengebühren. Es gelten spezielle Zulassungsverfahren.

Resident assistant - RA
Student, der als Ansprechpartner für alle Bewohner eines Studentenwohnheims fungiert und dafür ein Teilstipendium erhält.
Resident assistant A person who assists the residence hall director in campus dormitories and is usually the first point of contact for students with problems or queries regarding dorm life. RAs are usually students at the college who receive free accommodation and other benefits in return for their services.

Reverse culture shock
The culture shock an individual experiences upon returning to their home country after living abroad.

R.N. - Registered Nurse

Rolling admissions
Die eingereichten Bewerbungsunterlagen für die Zulassung werden bei diesem Verfahren kurz nach der Einreichung bewertet, und es wird dann bereits eine Entscheidung über die Zulassung der Bewerber gefällt.

Room and board
Unterkunft und Verpflegung.

Sabbatical
Sabbatical Leave time with pay granted to a teacher of professor after serving for six or seven years on the same faculty. Its purpose is to give the faculty member an extended period of time for concentrated study.

Scholarship
Financial award based on merit, including outstanding academic performance, special talent in sports or performing arts, or perhaps community service or leadership. May take the form of a waiver of tuition and/or fees.

SAT I Scholastic Assessment Test
Possible requirement for undergraduate colleges and universities.

SAT II Scholastic Assessment Test II
Subject Tests: Tests that measure knowledge in a specific subject area. Currently offered in: American History and Social Studies, Biology, Chemistry, Chinese, English Language Proficiency, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Latin, Literature, Mathematics, Modern Hebrew, Physics, Spanish, World History, Writing.

Semester
Period of study lasting approximately 15 to 16 weeks or one-half of the academic year.

Seminar
A form of small group instruction, combining independent research and class discussions under the guidance of a professor.

Senior

Sophomore

Sorority

Special student
Zulassung als Student, der keinen Abschluß machen will oder manchmal die Bezeichnung für eine vorläufige Zulassung ohne klare Zuordnung als "undergraduate" oder "graduate".

TA (teaching assistant)

Tenure
A position granted to senior faculty members who have demonstrated a worthy research and publication record. Its purpose is to preserve academic freedom.
